DOLPHINS, SEALS, JELLYFISH AND BARNACLES VISITS

Visitors to Cefn Sidan, Burry Port and Llanelli’s coast have been treated to a fantastic display of marine wildlife this summer.

Dolphins, seals, gooseneck barnacles and barrel jellyfish have all made appearances during the warm spell.

In June, thousands of jellyfish lined eight miles of beach and made national headlines overnight after being washed up on Cefn Sidan. All major TV channels descended on the beach desperate to catch a glimpse of the rare sighting.

This week thousands of gooseneck barnacles – a rare expensive Spanish delicacy – covering a 16ft steel shipping buoy landed on the same shore after detaching from its anchor. Again, this made headlines.

In addition, a pod of Dolphin enjoying our waters was filmed just off Cefn Sidan after been spotted by a local fisherman. Seals can be regularly seen ‘bobbing’ in the water or lazing around our shores.

Videos and pictures of the sea creatures have gone viral on our Facebook page and seen by thousands of people across the globe.

The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “We have been graced by the presence of some wonderful marine life here in Carmarthenshire this summer. Our Facebook and Twitter page allows us the opportunity to share some of the magnificent sightings of these sea creatures for everyone to see.”

Rangers also captured baby weasels on film playing on our cycle path between Burry Port and Pembrey – a video of them posted on Facebook has been viewed over 18,000 times.

Countryside and Coast manager, Rory Dickinson said: “We’re privileged to have been part of these rare sightings across the coast, mostly in Cefn Sidan. We don’t know what’s going to be coming in next but it all adds to the beauty of Carmarthenshire’s coast and is attracting visitors from all over the country and beyond.”
