Neighbourhood police in Llanelli have ventured into the local market – to set out their stall.

The Neighbourhood Police Department based in Llanelli Police Station is taking over a stall at Llanelli Market which police and partners such as the Fire Service will use to promote crime prevention, fire safety and other issues. Also present will be officers from trading standards providing help and advice and a new partner the Citizens Advice Bureau. They will be able to help with financial problems and a huge variety of other issues.

The first stall has been held in Llanelli Market and now due to that success they have expanded. The next stall will run from 10am to 2pm on Thursday August 20.

It is an advice drop-in centre with a range of security equipment so that people can see what is available to make their homes more secure. The Fire Service gives free safety checks, offering safety tips and free checks of homes including fitting smoke alarms.

PC Dave White of the Neighbourhood Development Team said: “It’s important we get out in the community and help people be safe and feel safe With Trading Standards, the Fire Service and the Citizens Advice Bureau, we will be able to help, advise and prevent problems.

“We are very excited by this as the last one was more successful than expected and we want to build on that every time we hold one.”

If anyone would like to speak to a police officer or a Trading Standards/CAB officer there is also access to a room to have a confidential chat.

PC White said that he had the idea after seeing a similar stall at Bury Market in Manchester. Carmarthenshire County Council’s market managers were being very supportive of the project.

Executive board member for the Carmarthenshire Community Safety Partnership Cllr Pam Palmer said: “The Community Safety Partnership fully supports the work of the Neighbourhood Development Team in raising awareness about crime prevention. This is an innovative way of doing that.

“Although reported crimes are low, we all need to do everything we can to protect ourselves and our families from becoming victims of crime.”
