CHANGES to the direction public transport travels along Swansea’s Kingsway are set to be introduced in the autumn.
Swansea Council has confirmed that work linked to the changes will commence once First Cymru has taken the Ftr Metro out of service in the city.
The changes will lead to the re-routing of buses that currently travel eastbound along the Kingsway. Buses will continue to travel westbound in the same direction as other traffic along the route.
The Council is also considering the introduction of a dedicated cycle track along the Kingsway as part of the changes.
Estimated costs for the changes are thought to be approximately £200,000 and will include new signage, re-marking of the Kingsway road, re-modelling of some small sections of the route and the removal of some bus stops.
Cllr Mark Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation, said: “The removal of the metro bus gives us an excellent opportunity to make some changes to how public transport uses the Kingsway.
“There is some minor work required to enable the eastbound buses to use alternative routes. This will be done in coming weeks with as little disruption as possible.”
The Council also emphasised that the interim works to prevent public transport from travelling in both directions along the Kingsway is a pre-cursor to much more detailed plans to redevelop the route as a business district.
Cllr Thomas added: “We have plans to redevelop the Kingsway and the work to remove public transport in one direction will certainly help us to achieve our longer-term aims.”
