A £3 BILLION investment package means Swansea’s landscape is about to undergo its biggest changes in 70 years, according to Swansea Council’s Leader.
Cllr Rob Stewart says a combination of on-going and planned projects will further put Swansea on the map as a global, business-friendly city of innovation.
He says projects like Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay, two new university campuses and Coastal Housing’s regeneration of High Street and part of Wind Street mean the city is making positive headlines across the world.
Cllr Stewart said: “These are hugely encouraging times for Swansea with so many on-going and planned projects raising the profile of our city across the planet.
“Over the last nine months or so, an investment story worth about £3 billion has come together for Swansea, thanks to close partnership work between the council and organisations including Swansea University, the University of Wales Trinity St David, Coastal Housing and Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay.
“The team Swansea approach has never been stronger. It means Swansea will soon be undergoing the biggest changes to its landscape since the city was rebuilt after the Second World War.”
Other projects Cllr Stewart points to include plans to regenerate the city centre.
He said: “Shortlisted developers will soon be submitting final bids to regenerate the Civic Centre and St David’s sites, and plans to transform Kingsway into an employment district will gather pace later this year when work starts on demolishing the former Oceana nightclub building. This will help deliver a thriving mix of leisure and retail our residents deserve, while generating a level of footfall that will boost existing traders and attract more investment.”
Business, Cllr Stewart says, will also benefit from better communications than ever before.
He said: “It’s not just tangible developments people will be able to see with their own eyes. The London to Swansea railway line will also be electrified and BT has confirmed it’ll be trialling ultra-fast broadband in 100 Swansea homes and businesses.
“All these developments mean we’re in a strong position to apply for a City Deal from the UK Government that would help make Swansea a smart city and unlock investment worth billions more pounds.”
