A Carmarthenshire schoolboy has been chosen to represent the Young Ambassador Programme at the highest level.

Gold Young Ambassador Theo Davies, is one of 16 youngsters to achieve Platinum status after being selected by Sport Wales to represent Carmarthenshire on the National Steering Group and Leadership Academy.

Until now the 17 year old has been working alongside sport and leisure officers training Bronze and Silver ambassadors across the county. Now the St Michael’s School student will have a voice on sporting matters across Wales.

Theo said: “It’s an honour to represent the Young Ambassador Scheme at the highest level and develop myself as a person in doing so. I’d like to thank the sport and leisure team, the Gold YAs and my school for their support and confidence as I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Ambassadors are trained by the council’s sport and leisure team and part of their role is to encourage and inspire other children in their school to take part in sport and physical activity by running lunchtime clubs. There are three stages at county level – bronze, silver and gold – that start at primary school age right through to university level.

Executive board member for Education, Cllr Gareth Jones said: “Theo is an excellent example of how the Young Ambassadors scheme benefits the young people of Carmarthenshire. He is not only interested in the sports side of his role but contributes to this successful scheme in general.”

The aim of the programme is to get more people, more active, more often. Research shows that that when presented with a range of sporting equipment, children are likely to become more active.

Executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “Being chosen to represent Carmarthenshire on the National Steering Group and Leadership Academy is fantastic and I am certain that he will be a vital member of the group.”
