Latest figures show that Neath Port Talbot is one of the top ten performers when it comes to recycling waste and residents are being congratulated for all their hard work.

Figures released for 2014/15 show we are recycling 58% of our waste which means we are already achieving the Welsh Government target level for 2015/16.

The Statistics for Wales report shows the combined reuse, recycling and composting rates for all local authorities in Wales.

The all Wales recycling figure is 56% and Neath Port Talbot comes in seventh place out of all 22 Welsh local Authorities.

The Council has introduced a number of measures over the last few years as part of its recycling revolution to help achieve strict targets set by the Welsh Government.

This has included a switch to smaller bins and the rollout of the Recycle+ service to some areas of the county borough, which has made it easier for residents to recycle more materials more often.

However, to improve year on year and achieve the next statutory recycling target which is set at 64% for the year 2019/20, the council will keep all aspects of the waste and recycling service under review.

The Council will also soon purchase more recycling vehicles. There are already seven kerbside recycling vehicles in operation and the seven additional vehicles will help to continue the rollout of the Recycle+ service, and achieve our aim to extend this service across the County Borough.

In addition, this week, a joint promotion with Waste Awareness Wales (WAW) is taking place in an effort to boost food waste recycling.

Information events will take place at Aberafan Shopping Centre on Monday 24th August, Neath town centre on Wednesday 26th August and Pontardawe town centre on Friday 28th August, when residents will be able to ask any questions about food waste and find out about all the other recycling services available.

Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “I am delighted that here in Neath Port Talbot we are already meeting next year’s target of 58%. We could not have achieved this without the backing of householders and I want to thank residents for all their efforts.”

“We have introduced a number of initiatives over the last few years and clearly they are working.”

“However, there is still some way to go with a recycling target of 64% to be reached by 2019/20. We will keep our recycling service under review and continue to improve it and make it easier for residents to recycle even more.”
