Work is due to start this autumn to replace a popular footbridge in Cwmafan.
The Ynys y Afan or more popularly known Piggery Bridge is due to be replaced after it was deemed unsafe.
The footbridge was closed early in the summer for safety reasons because of a number of broken wooden planks. After further investigation by engineers, it was discovered that the main timber beams that support the bridge were also in poor condition and that the bridge needed to be completely replaced.
Funding has been secured by the Council and local contractors Ian Davies Plant have been appointed as the main contractors to design, fabricate and install the new hardwood timber footbridge. Work is due to start work on the bridge in early October and is likely to be completed by the end of the same month.
Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said, “I am delighted that we have identified funding in order to replace this footbridge.”
“With the bridge being an important access route for walkers and cyclists, it will allow the path to be accessed safely. I’d like to thank local residents for their patience while the bridge has been out of use.”
