Rhodri Williams is embarking on his sixth season with the Scarlets despite being only 22 years of age and he’s hoping that patience will pay dividends as he looks for more regular game time in the region’s jersey.
Williams won international honours in 2013-14, making his debut against Tonga in the Autumn Series in 2013, Williams has had to lie in wait for regional game time.
22-year-old Williams made 19 appearances for the Scarlets in 2014-15, with only four competitive starts, and is hoping to see a change in fortunes as the 2015-16 Guinness Pro12 season gets underway.
Speaking ahead of his side’s opening Guinness PRO12 clash of the new season, against champions Glasgow this evening, Williams said: “Glasgow have been quality for the last few years, their defence is class, hopefully we get a good result.”
Scarlets are without seven of their international players but Williams believes Scarlets can make the most of the Rugby World Cup period: “A lot of teams in the league are in the same boat, we’ve lost a lot of really good players but Glasgow in a similar position. It’s a good opportunity to get a good result against Glasgow.”
Williams faces stiff competition for the No. 9 jersey with both Aled Davies (28 appearanes in 2014-15) and Gareth Davies both vying for the same position.
Williams went on to say: “I’m hoping for more game time and look to push on at the Scarlets. With Gareth away hopefully I can get more game time and be a big part of the season. It’s good to have the competition; especially during the pres-season me and Aled have been pushing each other as much as possible. It makes you a better player.”
On the region’s hopes for the season Williams said: ‘We want to push on to get that top four spot that’s a main goal of ours. If we do a good job now during the Rugby World Cup period it’ll hopefully set us up for the rest of the season.”
Scarlets take on Ulster Rugby in the first home game of the 2015-16 season on Saturday 12th September, kick-off 3pm.
