DIRTY Dancing is currently beating Top Gun in the popularity stakes across Swansea.

Both movies are being shown outdoors at Oystermouth Castle next week, but the 1987 Patrick Swayze classic has sold about 150 more tickets than the 1986 Tom Cruise blockbuster so far.

Swansea Council has teamed up with The Luna Cinema to show the iconic films under the stars at the historic venue.

Movie fans are invited to bring picnic chairs and blankets along for the screenings, which will also have on-site facilities including a bar with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Hot snacks including slow-cooked BBQ pit food will be served on both evenings by Eat The Smoke.

Top Gun is being shown on Wednesday September 16 at 7.30pm. Dirty Dancing will then follow at the same time on Thursday September 17.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “There’s a lot of nostalgia for the 1980s nowadays, so it makes sense to team up with an expert organisation like The Luna Cinema and screen two of the decade’s most popular films under the stars at Oystermouth Castle. This follows on from the hugely successful outdoor screenings of Skyfall and Les Miserables at the attraction a few years ago that generated a terrific, family-friendly atmosphere for people of all ages.

“Close to 1,000 tickets have already been sold for Top Gun and Dirty Dancing, but there are still some available. These film screenings really are events not to be missed because they replicate the feel of drive-in movies in the USA that are so popular the other side of the pond. They’re the latest in a number of events taking place at historic Oystermouth Castle that are helping breathe new life into one of our most treasured landmarks.”
