Bridgend born Gareth Owen took to centre stage in last weekend’s opening round victory as Scarlets brought Glasgow’s 20 home game winning record to a close.

With vice-captain Scott Williams away on international duty Owen is relishing the opportunity to stake a claim for a centre berth for the region.

Reflecting on the opening victory Owen said: “The second half was a really big effort from the boys. Going down to 11 men probably showed what it meant to us really to win on the road and get that monkey off our back.

“We didn’t do our best away from home last season and it was good to get our season underway like that.

“As long as we bring our home form away we can compete with anybody, we probably showed that when we played against Toulon, for whatever reason we didn’t do that last year.

“Glasgow was exactly what we wanted, unfortunately we didn’t see the ball in the second half but we gave the champions a good run! It was massive to take, the first half went exactly how we’d envisaged it. We had a good build up to the first game and executed the game plan and saw it out in the second half.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s Guinness PRO12 clash against Ulster Owen went on to say: “They have a massive squad and plenty of strength in depth. We’re not taking anything for granted. It’s going to be a really tough battle out there; hopefully we can start our home record off aswell.

“We’ve worked really hard throughout the pre season. We’ve had a great run, a good start to the season and we need to continue that this week. We just need to play rugby.”
