It could be anywhere in the world, Caribbean perhaps?

A proposal to introduce a trial smoke-free beach in Pembrokeshire was backed today by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet.

It is hoped the pilot initiative – believed to be the first in Wales – will promote the importance of a clean environment, good health and well-being.

Following today’s decision, Council officers will now consult with relevant organisations and parties and report back with a detailed proposal.

Cabinet also backed a proposal to introduce smoke and e-cigarette free playgrounds across the County. The ban will extend to Pembrokeshire’s playing fields, sports grounds and car parks associated with these areas.

Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Environmental and Regulatory Services said the aim of the initiative was to encourage young people to choose healthy options in life.

“Seeing people smoke in family friendly places such as playgrounds and sports areas helps to normalise smoking, making it appear harmless,” he said.

“Tobacco kills more than 5,000 people in Wales every year, not to mention the costs to the health service from the treatment of smoking related illnesses.”

There are around 65 Pembrokeshire County Council play areas in the county.
