MATCHDAY visitors at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium are being urged to park safely and legally following the introduction of new parking restrictions.
Swansea Council has introduced a controlled parking zone along a number of main roads leading to the city’s main sports venue to prompt motorists into using the parking facilities provided around the stadium.
Sections of the A4067, including Pentrechwyth Road and Foxhole Road, will be covered by the new traffic regulations, which prevent motorists parking at the roadside and on grass verges leading to the stadium.
The latest action follows regular complaints from residents about the damage cars regularly cause to the grass verges and also cars causing obstructions on a number of busy junctions.
Cllr David Hopkins, Swansea Council’sĀ Cabinet Member for Environment & Transportation,Ā said: “Parking problems in and around the Liberty Stadium are something we are continuing to get to grips with.
“There is adequate parking at a variety of car parks near to the stadium and we are urging fans to use them instead of parking on roads nearby.
“The inconsiderate parking not only causes safety issues for other motorists and pedestrians, it also leads to severe damage to many of the grass verges that we maintain. Residents have contacted us to complain about this and so we are doing something about it.”
The council has confirmed that for the weekend football game against Everton, parking enforcement officers will be issuing warning letters rather than penalty charge notices.
Cllr Hopkins added: “We are keen to make sure motorists have plenty of warning ahead of any enforcement that we carry out. Many motorists have been parking there regularly, possibly not realising the problems they are contributing to.
“We will be advising the motorists to use stadium parking facilities and help us keep our main roads clear.”
