A Big Bang fair – one of the UK’s leading science events for children – will be hosted in Pembrokeshire for the first time, it’s been announced.

Big Bang @Pembrokeshire will be held at the Bridge Innovation Centre in Pembroke Dock on Thursday, 22nd October.

The fairs are part of a national programme of events and activities that get students excited about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

They are run in Wales by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the fair,” said Dave Thomas, manager of the Bridge Innovation Centre

“Big Bang events are fantastic for bringing science, technology engineering and mathematics to life.  This is a brilliant opportunity for local schools to get their pupils really enthused about these subjects.”

The event will include fun-filled shows, hands-on exhibits, interactive workshops, and an opportunity for local schools to enter their own STEM project into a competition.

Pupils will be able to enjoy the F1 in Schools 3D and Jaguar 2D challenges, the Night Sky Planetarium, Living Light, Thermo Dynamics, and FabLab workshops.

Also on offer are Dr Mark Lewney’s Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions and Dr Ben Evans with BLOODHOUND SSC – an engineering adventure.

Alastair Birch, Community Schools Coordinator, said the Big Bang programme aims to inspire the UK’s future scientists and engineers at a regional, local and school level.

“It encourages more young people to take these subjects, as well as celebrating their achievements in science and engineering through displaying their STEM projects and letting them talk with engineers and scientists, face to face,” he said.

“One of our aims will be to encourage as many girls as possible to attend, as stereotypes about women’s abilities and their role in the family can still keep women from pursuing maths and science careers.”

He added that it was a real coup for Pembrokeshire to host the Big Bang.

“We were very keen to host a Big Bang event here, and with our experience in delivering science and engineering activities, this collaboration with the Engineering Education Scheme Wales will provide young people in Pembrokeshire with a really exciting and fun-filled STEM event,” he said.
