A family in Crynant have been presented with a sentimental road sign thanks to quick thinking Council Staff. The sign was retrieved just in time before it was due to be disposed of.
The sign for Tre-forgan road in Crynant was replaced as part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s routine maintenance programme that identified the sign should be replaced due to its poor condition.
When noticing the sign had been removed, Mrs Melanie Jones wrote to the Council to ask if there was a possibility of buying the original sign. The road was named over 100 years ago after Melanie’s great grandfather, Mr Elias Morgan, who worked as a labourer on a nearby farm.
After attending a service one Sunday morning, the local Minister suggested to Mr Morgan that the road should be named after him in honour of his commitment to the local Chapel. When translated from Welsh, the road name reads ‘Morgan’s Home’.
Upon receiving the unusual request, the Council’s Streetcare Services Team managed to locate the sign just before it was due to be disposed of.
The Council has now donated the street sign to Mrs Jones, whose mother still resides at Tre-Forgan Road, as a gesture of goodwill.
Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said, “I am delighted that we were able to recover and present the sign to the Jones family.”
Mrs Jones added, “The sign has been there as long as I can remember and I felt quite sad to see that it had been changed. It was great to find out that it hadn’t been thrown away yet and that we could keep it. I am sure the sign will remain within the family for generations to come.”
