Wales’s oldest person, Gwenllian Davies, has celebrated her 110th birthday with friends, carers, a cuppa and ginger biscuit.

Night carer Caroline Jones at the Carmarthenshire Council run Awel Tywi care home at Fairfach, near Ammanford, made Gwenllian a two-foot tall two-tier cake with memories of her travels through the years from 1905 beautifully iced into the creation.

But surrounded by three fellow centenarians at her home – retired nurse 103-year-old Mary Kier, 103; former farmer Winston Peregrine, 102; and Nancy James, 101 – Gwenllian preferred her cuppa and a ginger biscuit.

County executive board member for social care and health Cllr Jane Tremlett, paying tribute to the remarkable Gwenllian, said: “What a landmark for Gwenllian and the council who have the honour of caring for her.”

Gwenllian was delighted the Her Majesty the Queen sported a bright yellow dress on her latest congratulatory card reserved for the centenarian birthday club saying: “She looks better in yellow than blue!”

In her collection of 10 royal birthday cards, accumulated since 2005, the Queen is wearing blue in six of them.

Acting home manager Louise Thomas-Leith said: “Gwenllian took her birthday in her stride saying she didn’t want a fuss ‘it’s just another birthday’!“

The home staff and Gwenllian’s family collected memorabilia from 110 years ago to make a video exhibition of items and events from Gwenllian’s life to highlight the occasion, shared with 32 home residents including butter patters, tin baths and Wright brothers pictures.

The Wright brothers took to the air for the first time the day Gwenllian was born in 1905
