The city was awarded the status back in February in recognition of the progress made in raising the standards of its night-time economy.
Swansea is now the only place in Wales to be flying a Purple Flag.
Theatre, live music, gallery events, dance, yoga, adrenaline nights at the LC and sessions at Laserzone are among the activities taking place from Friday October 2 to Sunday October 4. In addition to the events, buildings across the city will be bathed in purple lights for the weekend. Swansea BID is providing purple filters for this purpose for external business lighting, and the Council is arranging for civic buildings to be lit in purple too.
Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing, said: “I can’t believe the diversity of what’s available this weekend – there’s truly something for all ages and all tastes.
“What’s great is that so much of what’s on happens every week in Swansea anyway, so once people have experienced something during the Purple Flag Weekend, hopefully they’ll go back again and again in future.
“We’re fully behind the aims and ideals of the Purple Flag accreditation because we can see the benefits of having the flag. This is why we’ve made a commitment to maintain the standards necessary to hold the award.
“Nowhere else in Wales holds the Blue, Green and Purple Flags, so Swansea really does have it all: great beaches, beautiful green spaces and a vibrant, safe city centre.”
Regarded as the UK and Ireland’s Gold Standard for town and city centres at night, the prized Purple Flag accreditation is based on a demanding set of criteria related to the quality of the user experience in the city centre.
The Association of Town Centre Managers (ATCM) runs the award scheme alongside the Purple Flag Advisory Committee – a partnership made up of stakeholder groups backed by the government, the police and businesses.
Swansea has achieved a consistent rise in the number of people using the pubs, restaurants, cinemas and other entertainment venues in the city centre between 5pm and 5am. The city has also seen a steady drop in crimes committed in the area during these hours.
