Kingsway set to go one-way from November

CHANGES which will see the introduction of one-way bus services on Swansea’s Kingsway from November 1 are taking place over the coming weeks.

Visitors will see work taking place on putting fresh street signs and new white lines up on the Kingsway in the countdown period to the changes.

The changes are being introduced as part of the council’s on-going work in the area to prepare the way for further improvements in the years ahead.

An off-road city centre cycle route is also being looked at as part of the changes.

Cllr David Hopkins, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Since First Cymru announced the withdrawal of the ftr metro buses, we’ve been determined to introduce one-way traffic on the former metro track as quickly as possible.

“We expect that to happen from November 1. What it will mean is that all traffic on Kingsway will head in one direction – from east to west – from that day.”

He added: “This will mean that some bus services which have used the metro track to head up towards Orchard Street in the past will be diverted. Other services, like taxis, will also use different routes.”

Cllr Hopkins said: “Cyclists also used to be able to use the metro track for cross-city journeys and we’re now working to develop improvements to the cycle network so they can continue to make the most of available routes.”

The changes to the Kingsway are an early start on a series of improvements to the city centre being led by the council in coming years.

The authority has already purchased the former Oceana nightclub. Demolition of the site is due to start in coming weeks to pave the way for its role as the hub of a new city centre employment district.
