There were dramatic scenes at Bont Fawr viaduct this week as extensive maintenance started.

The iconic viaduct in Pontrhydyfen, famous for its images of Richard Burton crossing it in the 1950’s, had been identified as needing maintenance work in order to preserve it.

The first phase of this work was completed over 7 days as specialist contractors ‘Up and Under Ltd’ were commissioned to survey the landmark and remove vegetation growing on its sides. As part of this work, those passing the 75 foot high walkway were treated to scenes out of a movie as workers abseiled down its sides.

The work was highlighted as a priority in July, with Neath Port Talbot Council included it in its £3m schedule of maintenance and upgrading works as part of the Highways and Neighbourhood Works Programme.

The former aqueduct is now an A listed Grade II* structure, and one of the few surviving related to the use of water power in the iron industry of the region and is among the finest surviving works of civil engineering in early 19th century in Wales.

It has since been converted to a footway for public leisure purposes being part of the National cycle network and also hosts the annual Richard Burton fun run, with competitors crossing it as part of the route.

Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said “It is great to see that maintenance work on this 19th century landmark is progressing.”

“It offers an insight not only into our industrial history, but also our cultural one having been photographed many times throughout the life of Richard Burton. “Neath Port Talbot Council is committed to maintaining the County Borough’s highways, bridges and footways, and this work will ensure the viaduct stands for future generations to enjoy.

“Further restoration to the site is now planned in collaboration with CADW including essential work to abutments, piers and arches based on the survey conducted.”
