More than 100 people have started their conversation with ‘Shwmae’ during their visit to Llanelli Market.

As part of the national Shwmae Sumae Day on October 15, shoppers were urged to start their conversation with Shwmae to be entered into a free raffle to win a grand hamper donated by traders.

More than 125 people entered the draw, with the hamper including fruit, flowers, chutneys and jams, children’s pyjamas and slippers, a free breakfast voucher, calendars, a balloon, dried Seaweed, perfume, a jigsaw and clothing.

The lucky winner was Roy Davies from Swansea Road. Speaking about his win, Roy said: “Thank you so much, the hamper is brilliant! There’s lots of nice things for the grandchildren and I’ll give the flowers to my wife.”

This national event promotes the idea of starting every conversation with Shwmae, Su’mae or Shwdi! The event aims to show that the Welsh language belongs to all – fluent speakers, learner or those shy about their Welsh.

Welsh Language Champion Cllr Mair Stephens said: “Shwmae Sumae Day is a great opportunity to promote the Welsh language and encourage people to start conversations using Shwmae. The success of events such as this reflect the support for the Welsh language locally.”

During the event, Llanelli-based Welsh TV programme Heno visited the market to film and chat to some traders and shoppers.

Executive board member responsible for the markets, Cllr David Jenkins, said: “This has been a great event and has proved to be a success in encouraging people into the market and starting their conversation in Welsh.”
