From Dinosaur Day to Bonfire Night Lunch – school dinners are set to be transformed as children return to school after half-term.
All primary schools canteens are celebrating National School Meals Week from 2nd to 6th November by introducing a week-long special menu.
Monday will be Dinosaur Day with the chance to tuck into tyrannosaurus burgers with ‘hot lava’, while on Tuesday there is a Rugby World Cup theme with ‘scrum-half pasta bake’ with ‘winger’ fruit wedges or ‘forwards’ fruity flapjacks.
There’ll be roast turkey with herb stuffing and vegetables on Wednesday – National Roast Dinner Day – and the choice of a fizz banger in a roll or pinwheel pizza on Thursday to celebrate Bonfire Night.
On Friday, canteens will mark the forthcoming Remembrance Day with a traditional cooked ham dinner followed by poppy cupcakes.
“National School Meals Week is a great opportunity for the children to enjoy a fun and educational lunchtime,” said Cllr Sue Perkins, Cabinet Member for Education
“School food today is excellent and provides a child with 30% of their daily nutrient requirement at an affordable price. So much has changed for the better in school dining rooms and there is no better way of demonstrating that fact, than letting the children see for themselves and enhancing the experience with special fun events.”
