Carmarthenshire Council is looking to engage a leading specialist for advice on a major dredge at Burry Port Harbour.
A tender has gone out for consultants to provide detailed information on the best options and costs for dredging the entire harbour basin to remove silt.
It comes after members of Carmarthenshire County Council agreed to tender for the full dredge following a severe build up of silt in the harbour over the last decade.
Historically, the harbour has always filled with silt and has to be removed every 10-20 years.
Already the council has a robust dredging regime in place to remove sand at the harbour entrance. This is done every year in April ahead of the summer season when the harbour is at its busiest.
The amount of sand drifting into the harbour is dependent on the weather and due to severe weather conditions over the last few years has seen more being drifted into it.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “Burry Port Harbour attracts hundreds of visitors every week and we are very proud to have such a wonderful facility. In July Carmarthenshire County Council members agreed to tender for the full dredge of the outer harbour and that process is now underway. We have to be confident that the best advice is sought on how to carry out a major dredge of the harbour and we look forward to receiving tender responses by the end of this month.”
