Lower 20mph speed limits are set to be introduced on roads near eighteen schools in Swansea.

The road safety measures are aimed at providing a safer environment for children walking to and from school.

Dozens of streets will have their speed limit lowered to 20mph and Swansea Council is in the process of advertising the plans so that residents can give their views on it.

Work will also be completed to introduce zig zags and keep clear signs to stop cars parking directly outside some schools.

Schools included in the latest road safety measures include YGG Pontybrenin, Waunarlwydd Primary School, Pontlliw Primary, YGG Gellionen and Gorseinon Primary School.

The £100,000 investment is part of the Council’s ongoing work to create safer environments near to every school in the city.

David Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transformation, said: “The introduction of 20mph speed limits outside all schools in Swansea is a commitment we have made to ensure all children going to and from school are as safe as possible on our roads.

“The latest list of schools will now benefit from a much safer environment and potentially save lives.”

Previous improvements have been implemented throughout Swansea near other schools after the council has successfully applied for safer routes in communities funding from the Welsh Government.

Schools previously benefitting from lower 20mph include  Gendros Primary, Mayals Primary, Llangyfelach Primary, Pengelli Primary and Knelston Primary.

Last year the Council backed Go Safe’s 20mph Rule Outside Schools which took place throughout Wales. In Swansea mobile speed cameras were deployed at a number of local schools as part of the campaign and motorists were advised on safe driving near local schools.

Chris Hume, Partnership Manager, GoSafe said: “We will continue to work together with our partners on community engagement activities to make the streets outside schools safer.  Our aim is for everyone in Wales to understand the effects that those exceeding the 20mph limit can have on families and friends.”
