Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd has been appointed by the council to construct the £5million Carmarthen West Link Road.

The road will link the A40 at Travellers Rest with College Road, providing direct access to the Trunk Road network for St David’s Park, Hywel Dda Health Board’s Hafan

Derwen and the University of Wales Trinity St David’s Carmarthen campus as well as the proposed new S4C headquarters.

Preliminary works including establishing the site compound and initial site clearance have already got underway.

Discussions with landowners and other interested parties are well advanced and the main works will start as soon as possible.
Griffiths has appointed Gail Jones as community liaison officer to ensure residents are kept informed and to act as a point of contact in case they have any questions or concerns relating to the work.

Gail said: “At Griffiths, we pride ourselves in delivering our projects in the most efficient and respectful manner possible and whilst construction works can sometimes be disruptive we hope that by keeping residents well informed we will minimise this disruption.”

Residents have already received letters and there are plans to keep them up-to-date with regular newsletters and a web page to show the progress being made on the construction of the road, which is expected to take around 12 months.

Carmarthen West has been identified as a strategic site within the council’s Local Development Plan and is allocated for mixed use development including 1,100 new homes, a primary school, employment space, a small retail centre, open space and affordable housing.
The link road is a key part of the development and a Local Transport Fund grant of £1.3 million has been secured from Welsh Government, with further support from University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans said: “I am delighted that a contractor has been appointed and a start has already been made on some preliminary works.

“It is important local residents are kept up-to-date with the progress being made and I am pleased that Gail has been appointed so that hopefully any disruption will be kept to a minimum.

“As well as providing direct transport links, the new road will also help to alleviate traffic congestion in the area, particularly at the Job’s Well Road traffic lights. The development itself will provide a significant economic boost to the area and numerous community benefits such as employment, recruitment and training; and educational opportunities for local schools.”
