Essential maintenance improvements for Swansea Council’s computer systems are taking place this weekend.
Some services will be unavailable over the weekend of Saturday November 14 and Sunday November 15, but the council has already taken steps which will minimise disruption and ensure key weekend emergency services are maintained.
Cllr Clive Lloyd, Cabinet Member for Transformation and Performance, said: “As public reliance on IT systems increases it is important to ensure these systems are available when we need them.
“That’s why we’re taking this opportunity to increase the resilience of our network at the same time as services needed to be shut down for essential electrical maintenance improvement works as well.
“I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, but there will be long-term gains for customers because this work will help ensure our services in the future are more resilient and responsive to customers’ needs in this 21 century digital era.”
The Civic Centre, including the Central Library and the Coastline Café, will be closed to the public on Saturday November 14 but wedding ceremonies will not be affected.
The opening weekend of Waterfront Winterland and the Christmas Parade will not be affected and attractions like the Grand Theatre, leisure centres and Swansea Museum will all be open at normal hours.
Libraries and other council services will be providing as near a normal service as possible but with limited computer facilities. Public internet use at libraries, for example, will not be available.
The majority of weekend services will continue as usual although the weekend phone numbers for the environmental health, social care and housing services will be affected by the work and users may be asked to dial an alternate number in some cases.
The council’s website will be operating but access to online services such as payment services will not be available for much of the weekend.
Work is due to start on the Friday evening (November 13) and systems are expected to be working again by Sunday afternoon (November 15).
