A minute’s silence will be held at Swansea’s first full Council meeting since the Paris terrorist attacks.

Councillors meeting at the Guildhall on Thursday, November 26, will be invited to observe a silence as a mark of respect to the 130 killed and hundreds injured in the shootings and bombings in Paris on November 13th.

In immediate aftermath of those attacks flags were lowered at Swansea Council buildings for a day, staff held a minute’s silence and the Brangwyn Hall arches at the city’s Guildhall were bathed in the colours of the French Tricolore flag.

Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said “The Guildhall has been Swansea’s civic centre for both celebration and commemoration for over eighty years. It is fitting that the silence should be held at the first official meeting of all councillors together in this historic setting.”

The minutes silence on Thursday will be at the first full Council meeting to be held since Paris tragedy and also the first in the revived Guildhall chamber which will now be permanent home of all the City and County’s major political debates.

The decision to move back to the Guildhall Chamber permanently follows the transfer of councillors and officers to the Guildhall from the Civic Centre and Penllergaer offices which are being sold or redeveloped to help boost Council finances.

The works also help future-proof the chamber for any future local government reorganisation.
