The children of Gowerton are set for a New Year present to remember when they move into their multi-million pound new school in early 2016.

The 21st century state-of-the art school is set to serve generations of young people in the years to come who will be able to enjoy first-class education facilities and direct, safe access to outdoor facilities too.

The finishing touches are being put on the new Gowerton Primary School which will unite the children on one site for the first time in its history.

Cllr Jen Raynor, Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Education is one of the council’s top priorities so it’s great to reach the final phase of what is the latest project in our QEd 2020 programme which aims to boost pupil attainment by improving school environments.

“The children of Gowerton are about to have the chance to enjoy what the children of Burlais Primary School have got after they moved out from Victorian-era buildings to a brand new school in September.

“It is the kind of transformation we’re hoping to achieve for other communities in Swansea in the years ahead as well.”

“Gowerton pupils and the local community have already had a taste of the benefits this new school is bringing as the new 3G multi-sports pitch and the upgraded play area are already open and being enjoyed.

“However I am sure they are looking forward to the day in January next year when the school will open its door to pupils and at last all of Gowerton Primary will come together on one site with access to 21st century facilities and green space just outside their classrooms.”

The school has been built on a local playing field, The Elba, and the package also boasts enhanced community facilities and plenty of green space for sports and recreation for local people as well.

Building work on site is complete and has been handed over to Swansea Council by Cwmbwrla -based contractors Interserve on schedule so that Swansea Council and the school can prepare it to take in pupils in January.

The £6.8 million new school is being funded jointly by the Welsh Government and Swansea Council.

Susie Ralph, Gowerton Headteacher, said: “We are entering a very busy and exciting time where we will be working with the Council to get our new school ready to receive pupils.

“Having our whole school community on one site in a modern learning environment will support our children to achieve their full potential.

“It will also mean our pupils will gain immediate access to extensive outdoor green spaces for play and learning including habitat areas and playing pitches.”

Gowerton Primary School was established in 2010 following the amalgamation of Tregywr Infant and Tregwyr Junior Schools.
