LOCAL residents are being asked to help in the drawing up of walking and cycling maps in villages and townships about Carmarthenshire.

The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 aims to make the walking and cycling the easiest option for short journeys for communities that have populations of more than 2,000.

The Act makes it mandatory for councils to produce maps to highlight all available walking and cycling routes within the communities.

To gain a clear picture for the preparation of these maps Carmarthenshire council transport division is consulting with local residents to gain a clear picture of the use and state of these routes.

Areas concerned are Amman Valley West; Ammanford, Glanamman, Pantamman, Brynamman, Carmarthen, Cwmann, Drefach and Tumble; Kidwelly, Llandovery, Llandeybie, Llanelli, Llangennech and Hendy, Pembrey and Burry Port, Pwll and St Clears.

The consultation questionnaire with downloadable maps is online now until December 12 at http://ilocal.carmarthenshire.gov.uk/consultations/active-travel/

The information will help form part of the final route maps that will be submitted to Welsh Government and also shape consultation on the Integrated Transport Map for the aspirations over the next 15 years.
