A diver who trains at Llanelli Leisure Centre has made a huge splash after winning a British title.

Phillip David, beat off stiff competition to win gold at the British Winters Masters Diving Championships in Corby earlier this month.

The 53-year-old who trains at both Llanelli and Aberdare centres impressed The Great Britain Diving Federation judges with his four-piece diving rotation at Novice level in the over 50s age group.

Llanelli Leisure Centre is the only one of its kind in Carmarthenshire and just one of two in Wales that offers the aquatic activity.

The centre’s facilities manager, Steve Owens said: “We’re extremely proud of Phil, he’s so dedicated and committed to his training and all his hard work has paid off. It was the first time for him to compete so hopefully his win will inspire other people who have thought about trying diving to come and have a go. We’re so lucky to have diving facilities here in Llanelli being one of only three centres in the whole of Wales.”

The centre is looking to set up adult classes alongside the popular junior ones.

Llanelli diving coach Ricky Thomas said: “We’d love to be able to set up an adult class at Llanelli and there are no age limits so please if anyone is interested get in touch. Diving keeps people active and provides an opportunity to try something different. The junior sessions are light hearted and proving very popular with some people staying in the classes for a number of years.”

Beginners will learn basic diving skills starting at the poolside before progressing to the boards and finally unsupported.

Executive board member for regeneration and leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “We are very lucky to have diving facilities in one of our leisure centres in Carmarthenshire and it is an activity for both adults and children. Not only does diving help build confidence in the water, it’s something totally different to school sports children usually do.”

Beginner classes are held every Monday from 4-5.15pm and Friday 4-5pm
