Davies remains true to home region

Scarlets are delighted to announce that scrum half Aled Davies is the latest player to commit his future to the region.

Carmarthen born Davies is a shining example of Scarlets’ ethos of developing the very best talent from within the region.

23-year-old Davies is a product of the Scarlets Academy system, representing the region from Under 16 all the way to senior level and has committed his future to the region until at least 2018.

A solid individual performance in Scarlets’ European Rugby Champions Cup victory over Leicester Tigers at Parc y Scarlets in October 2014, which included a 40-metre interception try, saw Davies collect the man of the match trophy outperforming Tigers’ England scrum half Ben Youngs.

Davies has made 72 appearances for the region, scoring three tries, after a breakthrough season in 2012-13.

Davies attributes his recent development, and advancement to one of Scarlets’ constants, to the international recognition gained by rivals Gareth Davies and Rhodri Williams.

Commenting on the news Aled Davies said: “I’m really pleased to extend my contract with the Scarlets. I’ve been a part of the region since the age of 15 and before that was a supporter watching from the stands.

“This is my home region and it’s a huge honour to pull on the jersey that has been worn by some fantastic players over the years.

“The competition for the scrum half position has helped me immensely over the last few years and has encouraged me to work harder and continue to improve my game. I’m now looking forward to continuing in that vain and help the Scarlets remain in the top four of the PRO12.”

Head Coach Wayne Pivac said: “We’re delighted to see Aled committing his future to the Scarlets. He’s a local lad and is clearly very proud to represent his home region.

“He made great strides last season making the No.9 shirt his own and has continued his form into this season. At 23-years-old he is still very young and has years ahead of him; to see him continue his development here is great news for the region and for Welsh rugby on the whole.”

Davies’ contract extension sees him join a strong pool of players already signed up for the 2016-17 season at Parc y Scarlets. Captain Ken Owens leads an impressive group of players who have committed their futures to Scarlets Rugby including Jake Ball, John Barclay, Rob Evans, Samson Lee, Aaron Shingler and Liam Williams.
