Advent calendar style fitness tips and challenges are set to keep community gym-goers in Swansea on their toes this December.

Swansea Council is sharing a different tip or challenge every day throughout the month up until Christmas Day on advent calendars in each community leisure centre, as well as on Active Swansea’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Some of the tips and challenges include booking yourself in for a blood pressure check and trying a fitness class you’ve never tried before. Another of the challenges will encourage gym-goers to take an interactive cycle though the stunning scenery of France or New Zealand on the state-of-the-art cycling machines available at the Active Swansea leisure centres.

Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing, said: “Our staff are always thinking of new and innovative ways to encourage people to exercise more, change their exercise routines or join an Active Swansea community leisure centre.

“This latest idea will tie-in with the build-up to Christmas by encouraging people to think more about exercise in readiness for the inevitable Christmas excesses with so many parties and family get-togethers to enjoy. The tips and challenges will also set people up for their New Year fitness goals, raise awareness of the Active Swansea community leisure centres and encourage more people to join.

“The direct link between exercise and health and well-being means we’ll continue to do all we can to encourage as many people as possible in Swansea to make sport and fitness a key part of their everyday lives.”

Four of the council’s Active Swansea leisure centres in Bishopston, Morriston, Penlan and Penyrheol have been refurbished with Life Fitness equipment including treadmills, cross trainers and bikes.
Resistance machines, free weights, swimming pools and racquet sports are also available.
