Carmarthenshire’s archives should stay in the county, the Executive Board has decided.

At their meeting this week, members received an update on the archives and proposals for their future relocation.

These included partnerships with various organisations, both inside and outside of Carmarthenshire.

Executive Board Members agreed unanimously that the archives should stay within the county.

Cultural Services Executive Board Member Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “We have listened to the many concerns regarding the archive service and we have asked officers to prepare options to take forward a service that is based in Carmarthenshire.

“I would hope that plans for a modern, professionally run facility, developed with partners, would be brought forward in the coming months for consideration.”

Part of the Carmarthenshire archives collection is currently being cleaned and other documents are being stored temporarily at Glamorgan Archives until a suitable permanent location is found.

Series one and two of the Carmarthenshire archives collection are available for public viewing, and series three is expected to follow shortly.

Lists of the available material including Motor Vehicle Licensing Records and Shipping Registers can be accessed by contacting Glamorgan Archives.

Electronic access via the website will be available soon. The lists will be updated as the cleaned collection becomes available.

Anyone wishing to view the listed material in person can email glamro@cardiff.gov.uk
