Despite the wind and rain, figures show more than 25,000 people have already enjoyed Waterfront Winterland so far this year.
The Swansea Council attraction, based at Museum Park, opened on Friday November 13.
Running until Sunday January 3, the event, now its tenth year, includes the Admiral ice rink, a smaller ice rink for children, Santa’s grotto and a big wheel. Visitors have also been enjoying a ride called No Limit that’s been introduced to the attraction for the very first time. Reaching a height of 24 metres, No Limit gives 16 thrill-seekers at a time a g-force experience through 360 degrees.
Waterfront Winterland recently won the Best Practice Award at the National Outdoor Events Awards in Bath. It also came runner-up in the Best Event category.
Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “Despite the appalling weather in recent weeks, these figures show thousands of people have still been braving the elements to enjoy everything Waterfront Winterland has to offer. It’s a hugely popular event for residents and visitors to the city, and we’ll soon no doubt start seeing more and more people taking to the ice and enjoying other fun at the attraction in the build-up to Christmas when the weather improves a little.
“Recognition for Waterfront Winterland at the National Outdoor Events Awards in Bath is a major feather in the cap for everyone involved in its organisation and promotion. It was extremely gratifying to beat off competition from some of the UK’s biggest events.
“As a council, we do all we can to help generate a magical, festive atmosphere at Christmas. Waterfront Winterland, in combination with many other festive events, activities and concerts, has a key role to play at the heart of Christmas in Swansea.”
The Christmas Market on Oxford Street, featuring over 40 green and red wooden chalets, is also on-going until December 22. Other forthcoming Christmas fun in Swansea includes a Christmas party with the Overtones at the Brangwyn Hall on Sunday December 6.
