There’s only a fortnight left to nominate someone deserving of a Swansea Sports Award.
The nomination deadline for this year’s awards closes on Friday December 18, so there’s little time left to ensure a team, an individual, a coach or a volunteer gets the recognition they deserve.
Swansea Council’s sports development team is behind the awards.
A number of categories form part of the awards, including the junior disabled and senior disabled sportspeople of the year.
Last year, swimmer Chloe Davies won the junior disabled sportsperson of the year award, with David Smith winning the senior disabled sportsperson accolade. Chloe , who currently holds the British records in the 100m backstroke, the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley, competed in the London 2012 Paralympic Games as the youngest member of the Great Britain team. David, who has cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegia, won medals in boccia at both the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games. He also won gold at the Boccia World Championships in Beijing in September last year and is the current world number one in his category.
“We’re looking for as many nominations as possible for people who could follow in David and Chloe’s footsteps, but there are also many other categories,” said Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing. “While nominations for our city’s elite sportspeople are welcome, we’re especially keen on nominations for people involved in sport at a grass-roots level to ensure they also get the recognition they deserve – whether it’s a mum who washes team kits, a coach who puts in hours of work behind the scenes, or a volunteer who makes the kind of contribution that may otherwise go unrewarded.
“I’d urge anyone involved in Swansea sport to head to the designated website and nominate before it’s too late.”
