Today the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) announced the winners of their third-annual C40 Cities Awards, recognizing Vancouver and nine other cities around the world for their leadership in tackling climate change across key sectors. The announcement and awards came at the end of the fourth day of climate change talks in Paris.

David Miller, WWF-Canada President and CEO, is a judge on the C40 committee and made the following statement on the important role cities can play in fighting climate change and Vancouver’s position as a global climate leader:

“Cities are an important starting point in the fight against climate change. From floods to ice storms, this is where climate change is the most obvious to the largest number of people. As these impacts grow, cities must adapt and take concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

By setting aggressive targets, developing a roadmap and implementing over 100 initiatives across the city, the C40 Carbon Measurement and Planning award Vancouver has received is well-deserved.

Vancouver is demonstrating that real change is possible, and that taking action on climate change is a key step in creating healthy and vibrant cities. Their strong track record of success in reducing emissions will help build momentum at the Paris climate change talks towards a binding emission target. Imagine what is possible when we combine national leadership with city-level innovation.”
