Children at Ysgol Y fro in Llangyndeyrn have been shown what happens when you don’t wear a seatbelt.
The Carmarthenshire County Council’s road safety unit took their family seatbelt ramp demonstration to the school during Road Safety Week to teach the pupils why it is important to belt up.
The practical demonstration shows first-hand the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt – members of the ‘Dim’ family are thrown from their seats and out of the car.
The children are then shown what happens when the family do put their seatbelts on – they remain in their seats and in the vehicle.
Not wearing a seatbelt can be a fatal decision even on short, familiar journeys and at low speeds. In a crash you’re twice as likely to die if you don’t.
Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans said: “This is an excellent way of getting across the message to always wear a seatbelt. There is evidence that people are less likely to use seatbelts on short or familiar journeys, but this puts them at serious risk of injury in a crash. It could be the difference between life and death.”
Drivers caught without a seatbelt face on-the-spot fines of £100 or if prosecuted, the maximum fine is £500.
