Pembrokeshire County Council has cleaned up in the annual Loo of the Year Awards.
All 73 of the Authority’s toilets were entered into the competition and at the end of the ceremony in Birmingham on Friday (4th December), the Council had collected one platinum award – the highest on offer – 41 golds, 30 silvers and a bronze.
The platinum award was for the toilets outside the multi-storey car park in Tenby.
In addition the Council was also recognised for being the number one local authority in the UK for providing public toilets.
It was also shortlisted for the best individual public convenience facility provided by a local authority in Wales.
Danfo UK Limited – which cleans and maintains the toilets – were awarded best external contractor in Wales for the work which they undertake in Pembrokeshire.
The company then went onto win the overall award for the UK.
Each toilet was visited and inspected by a representative of the Loo of the Year organisation and judged with the outcome based on a grading system.
County Councillor and Cabinet Member for Environmental and Regulatory Services, Huw George, attended the awards ceremony.
“It was the first year we have entered these awards and the results certainly exceeded expectation” said Councillor George.
“It demonstrates that, by working closely with the private sector and local communities, there is an alternative to simply closing public toilets while still maintaining a high level of service.”
