Residents in Port Talbot are being urged to take simple crime prevention advice and to be alert following a spate of burglaries in the area.

Any suspicious behaviour should be reported to South Wales Police immediately by calling 999. Door to door sellers, individuals and vehicles which look out of place should also be reported.

During November there were 25 burglaries reported across the sector, including eight attempts and one distraction.

There were six burglaries in Baglan, five in Sandfields East and four in the Port Talbot ward. The remainder were spread across the town.

Detective Chief Inspector Esyr Jones, head of CID for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, said:

“We think it is important that we advise people what is taking place so they can take necessary steps to protect their homes.

“There are crime prevention measures that can be put in place to deter a burglar such as locking doors and windows, installing an alarm or CCTV, and not leaving valuables items such as iPads and car keys on show. Ensure that tracking software on devices is enabled. I would also ask residents with CCTV to regular check for any suspicious activity near their home.

“Those who have expensive jewellery should consider making use of a safety box facility or installing a good quality safe that is secured to the wall or floor.”

Small portable items such as money, jewellery and keys have been stolen, during the day or night when the house is empty.

Extra high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols are taking place as officers work hard to prevent further offences and identify who is responsible. Four people have been arrested so far and a number of burglars have been given lengthy prison sentences following a successful summer operation which came on the back of people being vigilant and information from the community.

Leaflets are also been distributed by the local Neighbourhood Policing Team to encourage residents to secure their homes at all times and report suspicious incidents.

DCI Jones added:

“Twenty-five burglaries in a month for the Port Talbot area is unusual and is a much higher number than we normally see which is why we are issuing this advice.

“The public are our eyes and ears. Burglars often live in, or near, the very communities in which they operate, so we would ask that any suspicious behaviour or individuals are brought to our attention immediately.
“It is important we all work together to keep the area safe.”

Anyone with information can call South Wales Police 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
