A burglar from Neath who went on shopping sprees using debit and credit cards he stole from houses in Bridgend has been sent to prison for four years and six months.
Darren Inder, aged 36, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday, 23 December, 2015.
He was caught after the cards he used left a trail of evidence which pinpointed where he had shopped and what he had bought.
Officers were able to examine CCTV from shops and identify him from CCTV which captured him in the River Island store in Swansea.
One victim – a 72 year-old women from Litchard, Bridgend – only realised she had been burgled after her bank made her aware of suspicious transactions. Another victim living in Rushfields Gardens in Bridgend alerted police when she noticed account withdrawals that she couldn’t account for.
When officers went to arrest Darren Inder at his address in Neath they uncovered an aladdin’s cave of luxury gifts such as perfume, aftershave and clothes which were worth thousands of pounds, in his attic.
He was charged and remanded in custody, where he eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and theft from ATMs, and also asked for another burglary in Garefield Avenue, Bridgend, and a theft from an ATM, to be taken into consideration.
Rebecca Merchant, said:
“Darren Inder operated like a professional burglar – he stole cards and cash from his victims who were sometimes vulnerable, and spent their money without any care in the world and without them even knowing.
“So brazen was his approach, he even gave his real name and phone number when making an order at the River Island shop in Swansea.
“Little did he know that his every transaction would leave a trail of evidence, which would enable us to identify him using CCTV.
“His lavish Christmas shopping sprees have come to an end, and instead of enjoying the luxuries that he bought at everybody else’s expense, he’ll now spend the next few Christmases with little luxury behind bars.”
