Shoppers in Llanelli will benefit from free parking on Saturday, January 2.
The Llanelli Chamber and Trade and Commerce have asked the council for a free parking in all council-owned car parks, including the multi-storey car park.
The council provides five days free parking for towns across the county each financial year outside the month of December to help stimulate trade during the quieter trading periods.
President of the Llanelli Chamber of Trade and Commerce Andrew Stephens said: “The aim is to encourage people back into the town centre after Christmas when the majority of retailers will be having their sales promotions.
“We are grateful to the council for providing the free parking days for the town.”
One of the town’s free parking days was taken on November 27; with the others being taken on Monday, January 25 to celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day; Saturday, February 13 for Valentine’s Day and Tuesday, March 1 to mark St David’s Day.
Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans, who approved the free parking days, said: “I hope that people will take advantage of the free parking on January 2. There will be lots of seasonal offers in the town centre after Christmas so it is the perfect opportunity to pick up a bargain.
“The council is doing all it can to support businesses and increase footfall in the town centre and hopefully the free parking will help to boost trade.”
Market traders have welcomed the free parking day. There are bargains to be found all year round at Llanelli indoor and outdoor market, including the precincts, which will be open as usual on Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm.
