YOUNG people are getting the chance to have a say about latest budget proposals being considered by Swansea Council.
Young people aged 11 to 16 have been invited to a special event on January 15 at Environment Centre as part of the Sustainable Swansea Fit for the Future consultation.
They will discuss budget proposals and be able to ask questions about how the latest budget proposals will affect services they use.
The proposals which will be discussed have been chosen as topics by the young people themselves from Big Conversation events previously held with young people.
The event is part of the Council’s ongoing work to promote Children’s Rights and listen to the voice of children and young people in Swansea.
It comes as the local authority faces having to make decisions on how it can reduce its budget by over 90 million in the next few years.
Cllr Christine Richards, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This event will be a further demonstration of the Council’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the need to involve young people in how this Council is run and consider their needs in developing services.
“Never has it been more important to get the thoughts of children and young people to help us shape sustainable services than now as we face £90 million of budget savings
“We have run this event successfully for the past two years and the views of children and young people have fed in to the overall consultation process and helped inform Cabinet decisions. Their ideas and comments have shown a fresh approach and make a valuable contribution.”
The event will take place on January 15, at the Dylan Thomas Centre, between 9.30am to 12.30pm
Any children and young people who are not able to attend the event will also be supported to feed into the budget consultation, especially if they are stakeholders who are directly affected by a specific budget proposal.
