Responding to the confirmation today that more than a thousand jobs will be lost at Tata steel sites across south Wales.

Plaid Cymru Assembly candidate for Llanelli, Helen Mary Jones said:

“I am saddened and angered to hear confirmation of job losses at the Trostre plant in Llanelli.

“This is a deeply distressing time for the workers at Tata and their families who will be affected; my heart goes out to them.

“At the eleventh hour for the steel industry in Wales, the Welsh and UK Governments should be doing all they can to secure the future of these jobs.

“Sadly, this has not happened. As Plaid Cymru has argued all week, a temporary part-nationalisation of the industry is just one option that should be explored.

“We would like to see the Welsh Government look with urgency at all options in order to support the industry. That must include them considering taking a temporary stake in the company and entering into a joint venture with Tata.

“This would give the Welsh steel industry a fighting chance of survival during these troublesome times.”
