Safe walking routes planned for Swansea community

Walking routes in a Swansea community are set to be made safer as part of a national road safety initiative.

Swansea Council has started work on a series of improvements in Llansamlet as part of the government led Safe Routes in Communities scheme.

Nearly £250,000 is being invested in a number of improvements, including the introduction of two new ‘puffin’ pedestrian crossings on Peniel Green Road and Trallwn Road.

20mph zones are also being introduced along Llwyn Crwn Road, Glan Y Wern Road and Heol Hafdy.

Other improvements include a new footway link from Trallwn Community Centre to Trallwn School

Road safety officers in Swansea Council helped to put the bid for the funding together after working with local schools and the community.

David Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Environment & Transportation, said: “The aim of the scheme is to work with communities to make roads safer so that pedestrians including elderly people and children can use roads safely to walk to school or local shops.

“The Llansamlet scheme follows discussions with local community groups and schools to find out what was important to them.”

The latest safe routes scheme follows on from similar road safety initiatives which have been completed in Townhill and Morriston after the communities were awarded more than £1 million to improve road safety.

In Townhill, lower 20mph speed limits were also introduced along streets around Townhill, Seaview and Gors Community Schools and new pelican crossings were installed along Townhill Road, Gors Avenue and Pen Y Graig Road.

Cllr Hopkins added: “The funding we receive from the Safe Routes in Communities initiative is vital to enable us to complete this work and help provide safer walking routes for everyone.”
