As the impact of Christmas spending starts to be felt in people’s pockets, West Wales Credit Union (WWCU) is offering advice and support at a new branch in Chalybeate Street in Aberystwyth.

For the first time, Ceredigion residents will have easy access to the full range of Credit Union loans and savings in Aberystwyth town centre.

The new branch was officially opened In December last by the Leader of Ceredigion County Council, Ellen ap Gwynn in the heart of the town, and provides the opportunity for competitive, fully regulated financial services, to be offered to people who are feeling the pinch, as well as savvy savers.

Julie Norris Aberystwyth Customer Service administrator, said: “If people are struggling moneywise, we can help with low interest loans with no hidden charges to help them budget during January and beyond. Anyone coming to us for help will be joining an ever growing local membership of over 2000 people, with £900,000 invested in savings by local people.”

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ellen ap Gwynn said: “Since the Credit Union Office opened in Aberystwyth a number of people have benefitted from debt advice and support. This time of year can be a struggle for families and individuals alike, and I have no doubt this will be an invaluable service for the people of Ceredigion.”

The office is also home to Ceredigion County Council’s housing options team who provide access to a housing advice service.

The WWCU was able to open in Aberystwyth in part due to excellent partnership working between the WWCU, Ceredigion County Council, The Wallich, Cantref, Tai Ceredigion and Mid-Wales housing Association, as well as Aberystwyth Town Council.

This way of working has been recognised as a Good Practice model in Wales by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Cymru, and was has been nominated for a Welsh Housing Award 2015.
