A new study by Intel Corporation has shed light on the reason we all find it difficult sticking to our health resolutions – a bad night’s sleep. This latest research shows that three quarters of Brits experience problems sleeping, revealing that the Welsh (67%), more than any other region in the UK, believe that not getting enough sleep results in higher stress levels.

Intel’s findings show that while the UK public understands the link between a good night’s sleep and their wellbeing, a huge percentage struggle to sleep and worry about the impact on their health.

Working with a sleep expert and physiotherapist, Intel asked the British public questions about their sleeping habits and awareness of the links to wellbeing, with startling results:

  • Over 1/3 of Brits (38.8%) believe that sleep quality and duration are one of the factors affecting their health, and it’s taking a toll
  • 9 in 10 Brits (94%) think it’s important to factor sleep into health and fitness routine
  • Over 50 % of Brits say that healthy eating (54.6%) and regular exercise (53.8%) are incorporated in their 2016 health regime
  • Only 1/5 of Brits believe that everyone needs eight hours sleep a night (21.6%)

Working with Sammy Margo, Intel hopes to raise awareness of the role that wearable technology and tracking personal sleep data can make in improving a person’s sleep, and overall health.

Sammy Margo, sleep expert, physiotherapist and author of the Good Sleep Guides, comments:

“When it comes to sleep, most of us are aware of the actions we can take to help improve the quality of our sleep. Wearables such as the Basis Peak provide information which allows you to look closely at what lifestyle changes you can make to help you get the best night’s sleep possible. Provided each morning via the app, the sleep score gives you insight into your progress, enabling you to pinpoint changes you can make, or ways in which your approach is already working.”
