Swansea residents are being urged to support next month’s spectacular Earth Hour lights-out event to celebrate the planet and the need to protect it.
On Saturday, March 19, at 8.30pm, Swansea Council’s Guildhall and Civic Centre will be joining forces with thousands of iconic landmarks from the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Times Square in New York to show support for the WWF event.
And Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said he hoped residents will be part of this stunning world-wide phenomenon as well.
He said: “We are proud to take part in Earth Hour again this year.
“The lights going out at our Civic Centre, at the council offices in the Guildhall, as well as homes across the city, sends a powerful message about just how much we all care about the environment in Swansea. That’s why it has become such a special an important event here each year.
“We hope residents of all ages will join in in their own way whether its youngsters switching off their games consoles or families turning off the TV, or people going the whole hog and turning all their lights out.
“It’s important because it makes us think about our environment and how we all have a role in protecting our wonderful planet for generations to come.”
Earth Hour’s unique display of darkness has become a global phenomenon with hundreds of millions of individuals coming together each year.
Last year Swansea Council and its residents were among millions of people across a record 162 countries and 7,000 towns and cities worldwide who celebrated Earth Hour to show they care about our brilliant planet.
Anne Meikle, Head of WWF Cymru, said: “We’re delighted that Swansea Council will be supporting in Earth Hour this year and hope that they’ll inspire many others to get involved.
“Climate change will have a massive impact on people, wildlife and habitats across the world, and we need to take action to protect them.
“By taking one simple step to switch off, you’ll be joining millions of people from around the world in this special celebration.”
