Children across Neath Port Talbot will be encouraged to sit down with a good book on the 3rd of March as World Book Day is celebrated by all.

The day, organised by charity World Book Day Ltd, is a celebration of all things literature and aims to get every child across the UK to explore the marvel and wonder of a good book. Children across Neath Port Talbot will be involved in the celebrations with £1 books available from the charity, and events planned across the borough.

School children will be able to take advantage of the £1 book token scheme organised by World Book Day between Monday 29 February and Sunday 27th March 2016. The scheme is supported and financed by publishers and National Book Tokens Ltd and allows children to redeem one book for £1 from a choice of 10 books, or to use the token to receive £1 off any other full price book.

Most large chain book stores will accept the tokens as well as smaller bookstores and some large Tesco and Asda stores. On top of this, children will be encouraged to dress up as their favourite books characters for the day. Whether it is Harry Potter or The Gruffalo, anything goes, however please check that your school is partaking before dressing up.

Across the day there will be a number of visits from Schools to their local library, allowing them to open up to whole new world of books, as well as regular activities and groups meeting as normal.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr. Ali Thomas OBE said: “It is fantastic that we can cultivate the next generation of bookworms within Neath Port Talbot.”

“Books offer a unique opportunity to immerse you in a different world or time as well as document important people and events in our history. Whether it be an epic novel or a celebrity autobiography, it is important that we all read, not least our children who will gain so much from this invaluable education resource.”

“Improving literacy skills is an aim under one of our main priorities at this council, and World Book Day will help support this.”

Book tokens will be distributed by your child’s school. For more information on library events visit www.npt.gov.uk/libraries, ‘like’ NPT Libraries at www.facebook.com/NPTLibraries or for information on World Book Day visit www.worldbookday.com.
