Dyfed-Powys Police has today rolled out ‘Community Messaging’ (DPCM), a system which enables the service to issue fast time messages to its communities and enables residents to play a part in policing.
Chief Superintendent Aled Davies said,
“Community Messaging’ complements our existing methods of speaking directly with our communities. Residents signing up to DPCM using just their e-mail address will receive messages straight into their inbox – messages which are relevant to their community, their lifestyle and interests.”
To sign up, visit www.dyfed-powys.police.uk and click on the DPCM link (www.dpcm.co.uk). Once in the page, individuals will be asked to choose the kind of information they want to receive, as well as answer a few questions specific to where they live.
Messages received through DPCM will be relevant to the information residents provide when they sign up and could include specific crime prevention advice, direct appeals based on local incidents and information about community events near to them. DCPM will be especially useful in support of the ‘Watch’ schemes (Farm Watch, Horse Watch, Boat Watch, Neighbourhood Watch) – where very specific information needs to be communicated to a distinct community very quickly.
Chief Supt Davies added,
“We know that social media is not favoured by everybody and many people don’t want to, or are unable to attend community meetings. DPCM is a way in which we can engage with our communities directly, in a more personal way than some of the other mechanisms we currently use. It also enables us to quickly rally eyes on the ground and expand our ‘policing’ capacity within communities. DPCM will also allow individuals to take on an information gathering role for their family or community, because users can request updates relating to more than one area if they wish.”
DCPM replaces the old OWL system. OWL users will shortly be receiving a message asking them to update their information on DCPM, thereby ensuring they will receive relevant messages in the future.
