No better way to enjoy family time together this Easter than with a walk or cycle ride through some of Wales’ most beautiful scenery, especially when it leads to an Easter adventure. Here’s Sustrans Cymru’s pick of family-friendly activities that can be easily reached by the 14,000 miles of walking and cycling paths that cover Wales.

1. Easter fun at Cardiff Castle

Cardiff Castle are hosting a brilliant array of Easter activities and events throughout the Easter holidays. From Easter trails and egg decorating to travelling back in time with the opportunity to learn how to swordfight under the expert tuition of the Warwick Warriors – be sure to book quickly, places are very limited.

Get those creative juices flowing by taking in the wonderful sights and sounds of the stunning Taff Trail en route.

2. On the Hunt in Caerphilly

Caerphilly Castle is one of south Wales’ top attractions and the fabulous traffic-free Taff Trail links up with Route 4 of the Celtic Trail which will take you right to the heart of Caerphilly and the castle gates. Seek and you shall find an Easter egg hunt taking place in the castle grounds on Easter Sunday.

3. Pontypool to Blaenavon Railway Path

Blaenavon Ironworks is a lesser known historical gem, exploring the rich industrial heritage of South Wales. Get a glimpse of the past with the site’s well preserved remains alongside the reconstructed company shop and workers’ cottages. Best of all it is completely free to all!

This historical treasure has its own hidden treasures this Easter, so go along and see what you can find. The Pontypool to Blaenavon Railway Path will take you straight there. There’s no better way to enjoy the stunning valley views than along this fabulous 9 mile traffic free-trail and the route is suitable for all abilities.

4. Lon Las Menai

Taking in the fresh spring air is so revitalising after a long winter of wind and rain, and Wales has so many beautiful places for us to get your daily dose. A top pick has to be the marvellous Menai Strait. Take the Lon Las Menai by foot or bike for stunning views across the waters to the Isle of Anglesey.

Start off on this wonderful traffic-free trail to discover the Easter Egg trails, Roman re-enactments, games, activities and quiz trails at Segontium Roman Fort this Easter.

5. North Wales Coast Cycle Route

Further up the coast, nestled in medieval Conwy’s narrow cobbled streets, you’ll find Plas Mawr; a beautiful Elizabethan town house built by a wealthy Welsh merchant. As well as discovering the history of this beautiful building, on Easter Sunday, you can take part in their Easter Egg Hunt. Continue your quest along NCN Route 5, the most wonderful way to explore the dramatic north Wales coastline, guiding riders past many spectacular beaches, heritage sites and charming seaside resorts – simply stunning!

6. Rhyl to St Asaph

This rural off-road route takes you from the popular coastal town of Rhyl down to north Wales’ smallest city of St Asaph. A seven mile stretch travelling from the sea through lovely countryside with plenty of sights along the way. One not to miss are the striking 13th Century Rhuddlan Castle ruins standing firm on the banks of the River Clwyd.

Rhuddlan will also be playing host to the elusive bunny and invites you to join the hunt on their Easter trails at the castle on Easter Sunday.
