Following a week’s rest and recovery, from what has been a grueling season so far, the Scarlets returned to training last week with a bang taking on similar challenges to those undertaken by Olympic athletes and Rugby World Cup winners the All Blacks.
32 of the region’s players headed to Cross Hands based Cycle Specific for a high intensity training session in the Wattbike Studio under expert supervision.
The Wattbike, described by those in the know as the ultimate training tool, measures your speed and power output as well as analysing your pedaling technique, which in turn illustrates where and when you apply power through your legs.
As well as serving as a powerful training and conditioning session it was also a great team exercise to regroup and re-energise after a week’s break.
Huw Davies, Scarlets Head of Strength & Conditioning said: “The training session at Cycle Specific was an opportunity for us to change the environment and freshen up mentally during a game-free week whilst still undertaking a tough conditioning session.
“The Wattbike is a piece of equipment that we use frequently in our sessions at Parc y Scarlets but it was beneficial for us to have expert coaching and for the players to understand how to get the most out of the bike and what they should be looking to achieve.”
Commenting on Scarlets’ visit, Dylan Morris from Cycle Specific said: “It was a privilege to work with the Scarlets Squad and prove how beneficial our High Intensity Interval Sessions on the Wattbike can be for other sports in particular rugby and it demonstrates why the All Blacks carried eight Wattbikes around with them during the 2015 World Cup.”
