SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER STATS: ‘DISPARITY CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE’

Commenting on new figures – obtained by the BBC – which show three Welsh police forces removed sex offenders from the register in the past four years, with North Wales Police removing more than any other UK force, an NSPCC Cymru/Wales spokesman said:

“These are hugely worrying figures. While they don’t definitively show how many of these offenders had abused children, we fear some will inevitably be included in those removed from the register.

“There are clearly significant differences in the interpretation of the guidance and this disparity cannot be allowed to continue.

“It shouldn’t be forgotten that every sex offender has committed horrendous abuse. Before anyone comes off the register they should undergo a risk assessment and – if they still pose a threat to children – must remain on it.

“We also believe those on the register have to be strictly monitored and this should  include regular visits from the police.”
